Science Enrichment Program At IIT-Madras 2022
The focus of the Science Enrichment Program at IIT-Madras 2022 (SEP @ IIT-M 2022) is on the basic sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, as well as other interface areas bridging these subjects. The program is meant to impress the essential unity of science and inter-relationships between its different parts, on young minds.
SEP @ IIT-M is a fully online 4 week program which ran from 16th May to 8th June, 2022. The program was conducted by IIT Madras, in collaboration with Pravaha Foundation, and Agastya International Foundation. 75 students from 10th to 11th grades from all over India participated in the program.
SELECTION PROCESS
Students were selected through a multi-step process starting with nominations from various educational institutions and foundations. The nominated students completed an online application process covering achievements in various fields including academics, and an essay. The students who passed this stage, were interviewed online by panels of distinguished professors from IIT-M. Over 200 students applied for the course. From these a diverse set of 75 students between 9th grade and 12th grade were selected to participate in this program, from rural and urban areas across India.
THE PROGRAM
The program was delivered online by expert faculty and renowned scientists from IIT Madras, Sastra University, and Anna University. The lectures were primarily on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It also included sessions on other interface and interdisciplinary areas based on, or bridging, these subjects, and on occasion spilled over into technology.

OUTCOME AND WAY FORWARD
The students were exposed to a rich and varied series of sessions, delivered by some of the most distinguished academics and scientists in our country today. The sessions also focused on building the scientific temper and critical thinking amongst the students, through examples, and through questions from the faculty. Contact details for the faculty were provided, and students are able to carry on one-on-one conversations with them on questions they have, and in terms of guidance on their future plans. The feedback received indicates that the students benefited immensely from the program.
The future plans for SEP @ IIT-M are to resume it as a fully residential course from the next year onwards. Lessons learnt from the online mode of delivery, course content, and schedule have been recorded, and will be used to further fine tune and enhance the program going forward.
